Jay Rechsteiner operates across painting, text, performance, film and sound, focusing on how public language enters private life. His work treats words not as explanation but as material, exposing how headlines, slogans and everyday speech normalise violence, power and exclusion. He is best known for Bad Painting, an ongoing series that uses crude image and direct text to register contemporary reality without resolution. The works function as records rather than commentary, forcing image and language to collide in a single frame. Parallel projects extend this enquiry through typographic works, participatory formats and performance, shifting scale and register while remaining rooted in the same concern: how language shapes perception, responsibility and distance.
