All about youAll About You examines identity, self-perception, and societal constructs through text-based visual art. In an age where publicly sharing opinions on social media often requires alignment with specific viewpoints, expressing individual thoughts can lead to backlash, bullying, or humiliation. Capital growth-driven state machineries worldwide appear to construct and foster public opinions that serve political, power-driven objectives. This series explores these complexities with a humoristic approach to language, navigating themes from spiritual healing and affirmations to the practicalities of submitting artwork to an open call. The texts, ranging from personal declarations to critiques of societal structures, explore ambition (My Infinity List), self-reflection (Take Back Control), and societal critique (Colonial Business as Usual). Statements such as “I am a successful artist,” “Artists are prophets,” and “Stop feeding the rich” oscillate between sincerity and satire, prompting viewers to question their assumptions and roles within broader systems. The series incorporates diverse materials, including newsprint, sugar paper, fabric, oil on canvas, masking tape, and acrylic paint, embracing a variety of surfaces and textures. The ephemeral nature of some materials contrasts with the longevity of ideas, reflecting the transient yet enduring nature of contemporary discourse. While elements like printing paper and masking tape emphasize the impermanence of material, oil on canvas adds a layer of weight and tradition to the work. Self-portraits are a crucial aspect of the series, bringing a personal and human element to the narrative. By engaging directly with the work through posed images, I highlight the vulnerability and intimacy involved in expressing oneself within the complexities of contemporary society. The work carries undertones of activism, popular trends, and the rapid consumption and accumulation of information. However, I avoid aligning it with specific ideologies or political movements. To do so would risk reducing the work to a tool of ideology, stripping it of its essence as art. All About You instead offers a space for reflection, dialogue, and critique, resisting fixed interpretations while engaging with the nuances of the human mind and the multiple realities shaped by differing belief systems. |
